We have received the following message from Portsmouth City Council regarding the 75th anniversary of D-Day and possible journey delays...
On Wednesday 5 June, Portsmouth will host a major international event to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and pay tribute to veterans. The event, which is organised by the Ministry of Defence on behalf of HM Government, is for invited guests, including D-Day veterans and heads of state. The national event will mark the start of five days of commemorations and reflection, and then revival-themed events in the city, centred on the seafront and the D-Day Story, organised by the city council. The full event programme can be found at https://www.visitportsmouth.co.uk/d-day-75. While we will do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum and Portsmouth will be open for business as usual throughout, an event on the scale of the national commemorations means the city will be busier than usual. So we will be encouraging people to plan their journeys into and around Portsmouth, allow extra time, and walk, cycle or use public transport wherever possible, especially on Wednesday 5 June. We will keep you informed on any update to the arrangements for the commemorations which may impact on your organisation as they are finalised. You can also keep up-to-date with arrangements on our website https://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/ext/your-council/your-city/d-day-75/d-day-75, where you can also sign-up for email updates. This is an important opportunity for the city to mark its vital role in helping to launch the D-Day landings, particularly as the events of 1944 are passing from living memory into history. We hope you enjoy the programme of events, and would like to thank you for your patience and understanding during this period.
