On Wednesday 5 June, Portsmouth will host a major international event to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and pay tribute to veterans. The event, which is organised by the Ministry of Defence on behalf of HM Government, is for invited guests, including D-Day veterans and heads of state. The national event will mark the start of five days of commemorations and reflection, and then revival-themed events in the city, centred on the seafront and the D-Day Story, organised by the city council. While we will do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum and Portsmouth will be open for business as usual throughout, an event on the scale of the national commemorations means the city will be busier than usual. So we will be encouraging people to plan their journeys into and around Portsmouth, allow extra time, and walk, cycle or use public transport wherever possible, especially on Wednesday 5 June. We will keep you informed on any update to the arrangements for the commemorations which may impact on your organisation as they are finalised.
