Springfield is determined to allow students to develop their skills and confidence in public speaking through leading assemblies. January marked Holocaust Memorial Day and also the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Mr Walters and Year 9 students Libby, Faye, Dylan and Lauren explained the background to the Holocaust with the Nazi’s Nuremberg Laws, told some of the stories of those affected and explored the importance of tackling racism.
The current Senior Prefects gave an assembly to Years 7-9 in which they explained their roles and what they had achieved for Pupil Voice during their time in Year 11. They also outlined the benefits of getting involved in extracurricular activities, both in and out of school. These young people have been fantastic role models to younger students and have shown kindness, maturity and resilience in their final year at Springfield. Lastly, Larsa and Soren, the Senior Prefects in charge of Diversity and Inclusion, have given assemblies to Years 7 and 8 about the importance of a society that does not merely tolerate difference but celebrates it. They made links between school and the workplace, explaining that businesses thrive when varied perspectives can be brought to the table. This was also a valuable chance to remind students that we have zero tolerance for racism, homophobia or other prejudicial behaviours and that it is important that everyone feels safe in school for learning to take place.
We look forward to more pupil-led assemblies later in the school year.
