Year 8 pupils have been working hard in their Music lessons this term to prepare their tutor group song entry for the annual ‘Springfield Sings’ (Christmas edition!) On Monday, 16 December, the judges and audience were treated to lively renditions of several festive favourites, including Last Christmas, Winter Wonderland and Merry Christmas Everybody.

The seasoned judges (Ms Spivey (Headteacher), Mr Waites, (Chief Financial and Operating Officer) and Mrs Evans, (School Nurse) cast their critical ears on each performance, and praised pupils for standing confidently on the stage, singing out with clear articulation and projection as well as working together as a team to create engaging actions and incorporate solos and duets into their group singing.

A special thank you goes to the Year 11 GCSE Music pupils who assisted at the event and gave performances to keep the Year 8 pupils entertained whilst the judges were out making their decisions.

As is often the case, choosing the winner was a tough call, but after a final ‘sing-off’, the judges awarded the first place prize to 8E who sang ‘Rocking Around the Christmas Tree’ with plenty of actions, energy and enthusiasm! Second place went to 8D who sang ‘Let it Snow’ with an amazing sound, great coordination and a lovely soloist at the end. The third place prize was presented to 8G who gave a tuneful performance of ‘One More Sleep’ and also featuring an expressive soloist. Well done to everyone who took part!

'Our group practiced a lot leading up to the competition. On the day of the competition, I was nervous, but as the competition went on, I became more and more confident about our performance. The atmosphere in the hall was loud and bustling, which I felt made the entire thing more exciting. I enjoyed the year 11 pupil music entertainment acts. The only feedback the judges gave our group was to space out more so they could see people better. I felt the competition helped me with my confidence while performing. My favourite part was when we were given second place.' (Azzam 8D)

'To prepare for the competition, our class had to practice the song in lesson and at home, learning the lyrics, trying to sing it without using the words. I was feeling nervous and I overcame this by enjoying everyone else’s songs. The atmosphere was exiting. I really enjoyed the year 11 pupils singing, I thought they were really talented. The feedback the judges gave was to sing loud and clear, take our hands out of our pockets and to just enjoy ourselves! I feel our performance went really well and I think everyone did really well. From this I also gained confidence to perform in front of everyone else. The most enjoyable parts was performing and watching everyone else perform, particularly my friends in other tutor groups.'
